repainting stained and poly banister
HELP! I am trying to figure out how to refinish a stair banister which was first finished with a stain/poly combo and is sort of sticky and peeling a bit. I would rather not have to completely remove the old finish. What are the odds? What is the best way to finish a banister? Just stain? Why did these people use poly at all? The shine seems over the top to me.

Stain needs poly/varnish to protect it from wearing off. The stickiness may be from skin oils and dirt. I'd clean it first, maybe wipe it down with a wet thinner rag. After a light sanding, wipe it down again with a wet thinner rag and see how it looks while still wet from the finish. If it looks ok, it should be ready to apply a fresh coat of poly.
Poly comes in 3 basic sheens; gloss, semi-gloss, and satin.
