Oil base paint over a latex primer

Oil base paint over a latex primer

Now that I made the mistake of putting oil base paint over a latex primer on an interior gyproced wall, what can I do?

Most modern primers will take either oil or latex over them without issue regardless of which type of primer oil or latex.Most likely you are ok.

There are times on interior work where a latex primer is the preffered undercoater for oil base enamel. Your walls should be fine as is but if you want to recoat with latex, you must first sand and then coat the walls with a solvent based primer.


Basically, oil base paints can be applied over most any interior paint but not the other way around. Exterior latex paints can be applied over weathered exterior paint.
