Question

I'm planning to apply a solid color stain to the wooden exterior of our 80 year old house. Can someone offer advise on surface preparation? It now has multiple coats of paint, including lead-based. Do I have to go back to bare wood, and is some kind of primer needed? And which is better, oil or latex based stain?
Thanks!

I would be necessary to go to the bare wood. Since lead based paint exists, removal should be performed by a lead abatement contractor (not inexpensive). The potential consequences (health-wise and monetarily) of self removal aren't worth the risk. A typical option: encaptuale...after that the surface may be painted.
