graco magnum DX paint sprayer opinions

I have rented a sprayer from Home Depot in the past and was really impressed with the results. I was surfing around the net and found a deal on the base Graco model. I figured for the price of a couple of days rentals per year I could own one. I am a home owner but help on a few projects and have been doing a big job a couple of times a year. Would this model satisfy me considering the Home Depot one was a Airlessco?

it's a diaphragm pump. These are not well known for lasting a long time. How much are you looking at spending?

as stated, the pump type is not known for longlife. another consideration is that some equipment like airless sprayers and pressure washer don't seem to take well to not being used. storage prep is very important. i don't know how many times i've had a customer tell me " i only used it once and now it won't work". sometimes rental is the best option.

thanks for getting back to me. I have seen that model between 2-300. I guess my question was will it perform well? If the unit is stored properly cleaned lubed can i expect it to last say 5 years?

tough to say. some units like to be stored with motor oil in the pump and others call for a water based preservitive. one key element is the check balls in the pump system. they need to be cleaned to prevent deterioration and lubed to prevent sticking to their seats. another way to look at this is how often would you need the unit over a five year period. if you could cover the rental over the same period with the aquisiton cost of a purchase then i think i would not purchase one and let someone else deal with the storage and maintenace issues.

Again thanks for the reply. My point is if a unit costs $300 and I spend $80+ every time I rent it and I rent sprayers 4 times a year. In one year I just spent $320. If the one I buy lasts 2-3 years I am ahead of the game. 5 years would be great. Now I still am wondering will a $300 sprayer give me the same results as the one I could rent?

A smaller pump won't put out the same volume and may need the heavier coatings thinned before you can spray them.

If you are renting four times a year, it may be worth it to get a better unit. You may also be able to pick up a higher-quality freshly rebuilt unit for the same price as that low-end Graco.
