Painting a TV Stand

I want to paint a tv stand. It looks like a cherry stain on it, very glossy. I just want to spray paint it a flat black. Will this work? Do I need to sand/prime it first????

I would guess it has a gloss polyurethane coating.you will need to scuff sand it to knock down the gloss and up adhesion. You could prime but the primer will be white especially if you want to use a spray primer. In a brush on primer(which will not look the same under spray paint as spray primer) you could have it tinted to darken it but you won't get it tinted to black or close to black so if you prime it will take a few sprayings of black to cover it.That said even scuffed up you might have adhesion issues with unprimed poly coated furniture.

I would add -make sure any furniture polish/wax is removed!!!

Liquid deglosser can help with adhesion but check on a hidden spot first.

Re: Painting a TV Stand

To my mind polish would be great. If you already decide to paint than follow the maksr's comments.
