I am new to this web site but could really use some advice. My new "old" house has light colored paneling throughout the living room, hallway and up the stairway to the second floor. Is it possible to paint it and achieve a smoothe look or do I need to remove it, fix the sheetrock {if applicable }and then paint? How can I remove it w/ ease? {PS I read the sept.7th post about painting paneling}Thank you all in advance!

The best thing to do with old panelling you want to paint is to remove it and replace it with sheetrock. Finish, prime and paint that, and it'll be good for years.

You could just fill in the seams of the old panelling and paint over it, but that's just putting off the inevitable. Eventually, you're going to remove that panelling and replace it with drywall. May as well do it now and save a few steps.
