to paint flat over semi gloss or not???

I have just painted a room with a color called "sea drops".. it looks like what Linda Blair chucked up in the Exorcist!!! I have swirl stucko walls (I rent so I can't change that) the bottom half of the walls is all wood slats, That I painted white along with all the doorways and other woodwork, the top I now want to change to a light sand color.I had painted with a semi-gloss, now thinking a flat maybe in sand color would warm up the room (it's a computer/office room) Can I paint a flat over a semi-gloss and should I? The room gets little sunlight, thats why I went with a semi gloss, for reflection of light. I am also tired of painting this room! Any suggestions on a brand of one coat paint to cover "Exorcist Green" would be GREATLY appreciated as soon as possible.. I can't live with this color another day!!!!!!!!

Pick up a can of Pratt & Lambert Accolade Satin in the #4790 base and have that tinted the off-white colour you want.

That's the paint I'd recommend to colour "puke green" with one coat. Course, knowing the other guys in here like Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore, I'm probably going to get a lot of flack over this.

Now for the Gawd honest truth. I expect that both Mr. Williams and Mr. Moore can make a decent gallon of paint. I expect that if I tried either Mr. Williams or Mr. Moore's top of the line paint, I would be duly impressed. However, the reason I don't try their paints is because I have been awestruck by how well the Pratt & Lambert #4790 base covers an underlying colour, that I have been hesitant to risk the cost of a gallon of paint to see if it would hide as well as Pratt & Lambert # 4790, which is tintable to any off white colour, and so I haven't tried any of the others.

The truth be known, I expect that both Mr. Moore and Mr. Williams can make a paint equal to that of the Pratt & Lambert #4790 Accolade Satin base, I would have a hard time admitting it in public. Gawd knows, I'm going to catch hell over this post from Chipfo and others.

 

Nestor,you flip flop all over the place as far as what you like and use. Amongst all the fluff you put into your posts you pepper guesses and assumptions on products you know little about. How about saving us all a little time and stop using your guesses and assumptions as fact. Isn't there a proverb " tis better for a man to stay quiet than a man to speak and sound like a fool." Think about it.......

 

verelucky, to answer your question, yes you can paint a latex flat over a latex semi gloss, just be sure to use a quality paint from a pro paint store, leave department store paints in the department store. As far as one coat coverage over drastic color changes, I have yet to see a paint that would make that drastic of a color change in one coat (to MY likings), it really depends on how compatable the colors are, one coat may cover to your satisfaction, but I have to please very picky architects and owners so I don't take those chances, I would plan on useing two coats.

 

Since verelucky's question has been dealt with(which is the most important thing) I would like to take a moment to address some of the flack that Nestor endures at this forum. I think I would have been long gone myself. I would like to assure him that all thoughts and ideas are welcome as long as very accurate. JDX is VERY blunt but always VERY accurate. No one researches as well as 2000 and no finer an applicator as Chipfo will be found. R.L. handles all of the difficult, problem surfaces, cabinets and many other things. Hy can be counted on to know which Peel Away we need when I can never remember. My business is an oxymoron if there ever was one in that I and a helper hang all of the paper in the 600 or so apartments we paint for at 40 complexes as well as custom 5000 square ft. homes where we deal with homeowners, decorators, builders and architects. Where I am going with this is I can relate when I hear Nestor advise on the best way to deal with his rental property and hear Chipfo on all phases of pro painting. All methods of application need to be heard at these forums so readers can decide which will be best for them. As for materials we must lean toward the best because that is what we would want in our own homes and owe readers a shot at the best job possible. Nestor, keep the ideas coming. Mike, in your opinion, can you see why Nestor is getting flak? He leads people down the path of confusion and gives some pretty wild tips. It wasn't too long ago we were teaching Nestor what a solvent is.

 

unregistered, In two words "I do". But, if Nestor or anyone else will take the time to detail their application methods, regardless of how far off the normal path, someone will benefit. What works for one may be disaster for another. I have seen regulars at DIY advise a 7 inch roller for a given purpose that is odd to me in that I can't buy one here but I have no doubt that it is great for them. If I ever advise something that is the norm in my area but it can be pointed out to me that it is not in the best interest of the forum readers to do it that way I would gladly modify or back off of my post. If you post less than 100% advice someone will call you on it and you had better be ready....

 

I agree with Mike, it is like I stated when first posting to this forum, I did not come here to fight nor argue. This is a public forum and the good thing about that is that everyone can post there opinions, and I agree that when giving advise it needs to be thought through as to not mislead anyone. People post on here for help because they don't know what to do, when we argue, who are they supposed to believe, they may not know which is right and which is wrong(if there is a wrong in a certain post's follow-ups) It is like they say: (Not directed to anyone) Never argue with an idiot, someone watching may not know which one the idiot is.

I do not follow you around to try and find fault, as a matter of fact I have never said a bad word about Pratt and Lambert, it just so happens that I like SW and BM and if I am going to recomend a paint it will be one of those, If you will notice I usually say "a pro paint store", one reason I don't use P and L is because the nearest dealer is over 45 miles away. I do apologize for any rudeness I may have inflicted. I will be more carefull about differentiating my opinions if you will also.
