I'm having a hard time removing what I believe is called "buttermilk" paint. It is a thick, milky white paint used on antiques in the old days. I have a shelf I'm refinishing and this stuff is very resistant to most paint removal chemicals. Sanding merely clogs the sand paper. Any suggestions?

Use a stripper that contains methylene chloride. Follow all safety suggestions: gloves, respirator, proper ventalation, etc., etc.. If this doesn't work as far as getting the paint out of the grain coat the piece with shellac and strip. Coat it again with shellac and strip. The shellac will help pull some of the paint out of the grain. Good Luck....................JDX
