Faux Wood Front Door Repaint/Stain

My front door to my house has direct sunlight about 12 hours a day. It is a faux wood door, and I think it is metal, it may be fiberglass. It is brown in color, like a wood finish. Now the color is rubbing off. It is like a dustlike texture that will rub off in places only leaving the wood texture finish, not not wood color.

What kind of paint/stain do I need to apply to get the door back to the same color? What procedure do I need to do for preparation and application? I beleive if I wash the door with soap and a brush I can get a majority off.

Thanks.

If it has a woodgrain molded in, it's fiberglass. I've heard of some metal doors with a woodgrain overlay...but I don't think they are very common. A magnet will tell you quickly.

If the actual finish color is starting to flake off, you will probably need to do a strip and restain. Normally the protective topcoat (Exterior Polyurathane, spar urathane or similar) should be renewed every few years depending on sun and weather exposure.

One the topcoat breaks down, the color coat is exposed to the weather and you get flaking and peeling.

Any of the major manufacturers (Jeld-wen, Masonite, Therma-Tru, others) should have complete instructions at their websites. Most are very similar....
