Priming plaster

We scraped all the paint off the walls and ceiling of our bedroom, revealing a plaster coating over all the drywall, yes dry wall, not lathe and plaster. Our question is, Is there anything special we need to do for primer, or just prime it and paint it. using latex paint.

Thak you,

Welcome to the forums!

What was the reason for scraping the paint off did you also scrape off the plaster veneer? What shape are the walls in now?

If the walls are ready for painting and there are no issues - a latex primer should do fine but if there are stains that need sealing or any adhession concerns, then a solvent based primer may be needed.

Cool

we had primed and painted over the old paint, and were in the process of paining stripes, when we peeled off the blue painters tape, in most places, all coats of paint new and old came off down to the plaster. it appeared to be a crappy kind of substance used to create some texture, which between the plaster veneer and paint, did not adhere. This was previous owners doing, so I have no idea what was done exactly. any way, about 80 of the paint on the walss peeled as easily as wall paper. Note, there is no wallpaper, just paint. In doing the walls the edges of the ceiling peeled so we scraped that to. about half the ceiling came off easy, the rest was a fight. so othe than some minor holes and where I sraped to much, i know I kneed to fill, we are going to was with a damp cloth to get all the powdery crap off, let that dry, and prime and paint. and this time hopefully our stripes will work out. She put a lot more time into it than I did, I felt really bad when all her work, had to be scraped away.

It might not be needed but I think I'd use an oil base primer - just a little insurance. The latex paint will adhere fine to the primer although it will take a little longer for it to dry. Fresh paint doesn't tape well! Be sure to use a low tac tape. It's best not to use tape when you can get by without it.
