refinishing bathroom light?

We have a Polished brass light fixture in our bathroom. It is getting some pits and needs something done to it.I have seen gold paint in cans ,i don't remember if it resembles brass enough to use,but has anyone ever had any luck repainting any hardware or lights using this type of paint in a can?It was rustoleum paint. We are remodeling our bath and we haven't really seen another light that catche our eye any better than the one we have and we got a very good deal on it just a few years ago.Any insight on this would be appreciatted.Thanks.

just paint it. clean it REAL GOOD first. those paints that claim to be a natural metal finish. are just that, a "claim".
