Painting an interior plywood ceiling

We have a Rec Room that was once a carport, and the ceiling is plywood that was coated with a medium dark stain. The house was built in 1965. The room is quite large, and we would like to be able to paint and primer with a low VOC if possible. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums Clarabel!

Do you know if the stain currently on the plywood is latex? or oil base?

While an oil base primer would be best, a latex primer will probably do ok. It wouldn't hurt to do a quick scuff sand first. I don't know if there are any no VOC primers available but there are quite a few no VOC finish paints to choose from. It will probably take 1 coat primer and 2 coats finish [assuming you go white]. You will almost always find better coatings [advice too] at your local paint store... not a paint dept.
