what have you found is the best undercoat/primer for red paint. i have used a black color as a primer coat before but it still took 3 coats of red way. should i have used a different color as a primer?

Not all reds and their paint bases are the same - some cover better than others. It's usually best to use a primer tinted grey, black is too dark. Here's some more info;

Mitch I don't know if that would apply to wall paint

Coverage is less of an issue when spraying although with thin automotive paints the underlying paint can affect the top color depending on how many coats are applied.
