converting redwood hot tub to large planter

We are converting our old redwood hot tub to a large planter. Before we fill it with gravel, compost, mulch, etc, we'd like to protect the wood from rapid degradation. Someone has suggested using a spray-on application, something like Rhino linings, a polyurethane coating used for truck bed linings. Rhino claims their product contains no VOC or CFCs. But I'm not crazy about using a polymer and wonder if anyone here has some alternative suggestions. Perhaps some advice?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

Whenever wood is exposed to underground moisture it can be a problem. I suppose a truck bed liner would do ok but I'd think more along the line of applying some roller grade tar, with plastic stuck to it and then maybe another coat of foundation tar. That should also be quite a bit cheaper

I'd suggest fiberglass resin and at least one layer of cloth.

Thanks, marksr and ray2047. We've been considering the tar idea and will now add the fiberglass resin to the list for further research. Since I'm new here, I'm not in the habit (yet?) of checking in here more than once every few weeks so I'll try to remember to check back in and let you know what we end up doing and how it performs. Thanks to both of you for responding!
