Painting stained oak chair rails & doors
Hello, I would like to paint the chair rails and interior doors in our home white but they are currently stained a light oak with a dull finish. I realize this is going to be a massive undertaking and that's not a problem. Can you pls tell me the best way to accomplish this and what product(s) to use? Can I use a primer/paint combo? Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the forums
First, you're sure you want to cover good wood with paint?
If so, skip the 'all in one' products they're advertising these days. You'll want to use an oil based primer and quality paint - head over to your local paint store (not the paint department in a larger store) and they'll be able to provide what you need.

I agree! Do a light sanding, remove the dust and coat with a solvent based primer. When dry, do a light sanding and apply 2 coats of your choice of enamel - latex is fine.
Failure to use a solvent based primer often results in the latex paint chipping later on

Painting stained oak chair rails & doors
Thank you all for the good advice. I do want to paint the chair rails white, there's too much oak in the house already. All that wood makes the house dark and dated. We have oak floors, oak kitchen & bathroom cabinets, and even the bathrooms have chair rails. What were they thinking!

It's all a matter of opinion, I ask the same question when I walk into a house with painted wood
