Non-toxic clear coat

Hello all,

I recently took a couple of polyethylene tubes (exactly the same as sewer pipes) and painted them with Krylon fusion for plastic. After that I sprayed 3 clear coats of Krylon Low Odor Clear Finish.

The tubes originally looked like this:

After the paint they look like this:

They look fine but when I gently scratch them with my fingers I end up getting some blue speckles on my fingernails. The problem with this is that they are going to form part of a dog agility training course and I don't want the paint coming off - both when the dogs run through and when the tubes roll on concrete.

Is there a better clear coat product out there that is nontoxic and will form a more permanent layer of protection from nicks and scratches?

Thanks so much for your help!

Ryan

Welcome to the forums Ryan!

How long have you let the krylon cure?

I doubt you'll find a coating that will dry to as hard of a film as you need Solvent based coatings dry harder than water based but even a good solvent based finish is apt to be scratched from rolling on concrete and from the dogs nails.

Thanks for the reply!

It's cured for over a week outdoors protected from the rain.

Are there any solvent-based coatings that are safe for the dogs? If not I'll probably look into covering the inside with a durable material, and screwing some feet to the outside so that the tube won't roll around...
