Salad Bowl

I would have liked to re finish this salad bowl but donít know how.

Salad Bowl pictures by kolias - Photobucket

The bowl is about 12Ē OD by 6Ē high and I used paint remover to get rid of the old stain / varnish but as you can see from the photos it still has various shades on the exterior / interior. Further sanding does not remove the various shades. It has been in the family for about 35 years and I would say itís at least 50 years old.

Any ideas how I can re finish it with non toxic stains / oils ?

Polyurethane is food-safe once it cures

I'd be leery of any paint coating including poly - it will peel sooner or later..... and I doubt any specs of poly/paint would make the salad taste better

I don't really know anything about it but would think some type of food safe oil would be used, maybe mineral oil ??

Linseed oil? Maybe?

Pure tung oil is also food safe as long as you don't have allergies. Not Home Center stuff...pure...from Woodcrafters and similar.

If the paint coatings are out, oil is all I can think of - there is food grade mineral oil

ANY finish that cures in 30 days is food safe.
Don't fall for those food safe products.

I wouldn't use film finish like polyurethane.

Mineral oil will be fine, just apply often.
