paint came off the wall in a sheet after storm

not sure if this is a paint issue of a window issue but I have a section of paint that peeled off the wall in one big piece, about 1 foot across, 1 foot down from the window sill. The back side is not the same color as the paint but I'm not sure if it is a prior coat of white paint or part of the drywall. I noticed this after Hurricane Irene. Can this be a result of a leak or is this a paint issue?

I would say that there is moisture in the wall. Try to find the entry point before you repair the wall.

Ya, that sounds like water caused it. Was the drywall/plaster wet? either around or under the peeled paint? How old is your house?

The water may have come in from a window that doesn't shut/seal properly or missing caulking around the outside of the window. I would assume the leak was due to wind driven rain so it might be a long time before it leaks again but it would still be nice to identify where the water came in and correct it if possible.

so I should tear out the sheetrock in that area and try to find the point of entry? If so, how do I go about replacing it when I'm done? Also, what should I do if I can't find the source of the leak?

I'd start on the exterior and look for any voids that might have let moisture in. Look closely at the window and where the siding meets the window. Can you tell if the drywall was very wet? Careful cutting of the drywall [if it's still solid] will allow you to reuse the same piece. I suppose you could cut a small exploratory hole to see if the insulation is damp.

If you don't know how to do sheet rock, than you'll need someone to show you. Before you open the wall, inspect the outside carefully. Be a detective.

Yep. Probably water getting behind the siding, (esp if its vinyl/aluminum/steel) then getting behind the window nailing fin (usually on top of the window) and if it doesn't drip in the top of the window it will pool under the window and run down the wall near the sill.

A picture of the outside of the window would probably help. The pictures would need to be taken from far enough away that we can get an idea of what is above/around this window.
