I have a ceiling that has some water staining. Plans are to first corrct the leak problem and then prime the area with a product such as Kilz. I was wondering if it is necessary to prime the entire ceiling or just the stained area? It will be a shelac based primer. The instructions mention about doing the entire ceiling to assure color matching when final painted. The entire ceiling will be painted because of the difficuly matching white paint. I Did not know if this was really necessary to prime the entire ceiling though?

If the ceiling is already painted then spot priming should be fine, you know kilz comes in spray cans also, for ease of application. BTW, Kilz is an oil primer, not a shelac as commonly thought and will work fine, just remember when changing colors, 2 coats is often nesasary. After the first coat dries look it over for any missed stain spots that may bleed through before applying the second coat.

Hope this helps.
