Question How to paint wood countertop

I have a wood countertop and need to know what the best method for painting it would be. I have primed and sanded the surface with oil based primer and have attempted to paint with Rustolium biscuit color appliance paint, the only spray paint I could find in the color I wanted to use, but the spray paint splatters. The first time it happened, I let it cure for a week, sanded down the splatter bumps and then tried again with a new can. Same thing happened. I made sure I shook the can as recommended and kept the nozzle clean, but I still got splatters. Even one splatter ruins the job, so I am frustrated and thinking that I need to come up with a different way of painting. What I want is a hard painted surface that won't scratch easily. It needs to be in this particular biscuit paint color that matches the color of the cabinets below. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I have to ask what this countertop is used for - paint isn't a great finish for a surface that food is prepared on.

Spray cans by their nature can be difficult to deal with. Large areas are better sprayed using a cup gun or an airless...... but you can get a decent job with a brush or brush and roller. Most any oil base enamel will dry to a hard film although an industrial or equipment enamel would be better. Most any paint store [not paint dept] can match any paint sample you bring in.

I have a wall to wall row of wall cabinets with toekick below my dining room window. the 15" deep counter top is on top of that. It will be used mainly to set decor on top, but may be used as a buffet on occations. I have searched all over the two big box stores, and only came up with the one type of paint. I did not try a paint store ... did not even think of it for some reason. I do have a paint sprayer. I will go to a paint store and see if they can help match me up with some good paint.
