Painting plastic/vinyl rain barrel
I would like to paint 2 rain barrels that are either plastic or vinyl. Please advise me regarding surface preparation and paint products to use. I prefer to apply the finish with a brush rather than with a spray can ....thanks !

Scuff sand, prime with an oil based primer and apply a coat of quality exterior latex or waterborne enamel paint.
How flexible are they? The more solid, the better.

I'd be leery of use an oil base primer - if the substrate flexes any with temp changes, oil base might pop loose. I'd add about 25% of Flood's EmulaBond to the 1st coat of latex paint to help insure a good bond. Make sure the substrate is clean [including rinsing off any cleaner residue] before you start.
Is the new color going to be darker or lighter than the factory color?

If they are the blue ones, you need to use Plastic and Vinyl Primer from XIM. I tried just about every primer in my store when I did mine, this is the only one that pasted the adhesion testing. And DON'T let it freeze full of water. I made that mistake and it popped the primer in spots.

The barrels are fairly rigid and I plan to paint them a lighter color....white !
Now I need to decide whether to use the Vinyl & Plastic Primer from XIM or about 25% of Flood's EmulaBond to the 1st coat of latex paint as suggested by bclacquer and marksr respectively. Also would like to know where to purchase each product.

EB can be found at all paint stores and some big box stores. XIM is also sold at most [maybe all] paint stores. I've not used the Vinyl and Plastic Primer but do have a lot of confidence in XIM products.
When painting vinyl siding, going darker can be an issue but not a problem going lighter. I don't know if the same is true about the heavier plastics. You might want to have extra mildewcide added to the finish paint - mildew would show pretty quick on white.
