Exterior block-flat or satin?

Painting the exterior foundation of my home. Its been painted before and is in pretty good shape. Just wondering which sheen is best for this job. There is no sheen to it now. Is flat exterior latex what most people use?

Probably although there isn't a set standard. Either flat or satin will work well. Make sure the existing paint hasn't degraded to the point where it's chalky. If it is, you need to either remove the chalk or add Flood's EmulsaBond to the first coat of paint - it will bind up the chalk, paint alone doesn't adhere well to chalk.

Also latex house paints are a better grade of paint than most masonry paints and will hold up longer on the block.

I'd go flat - the higher the sheen, the more of the imperfections in the surface you'll see. IMO, concrete is too imperfect for satin.

Mitch it's kind of a trade off - flat paint is more forgiving but satin will repel dirt a little better. I guess how well the block were laid and the joints were struck could be a determining factor.

Yeah, good point, Mark - the satin will wear better.

Guess I really don't have anything helpful after all
