tray ceiling paint colors?

hi. we want to paint our MBR walls and ceiling. walls will be a light yellow or tan. maybe a silly question, but how do I handle the ceiling and recessed tray?

is the ceiling and tray all one color? if not, is the tray usually lighter or darker than the rest of the ceiling? and are they both lighter or darker than the walls themselves? or does the tray pick up the wall color or something?

hopefully that makes sense. I am sure preference comes into play but what is more common (thinking resale)?

cheers,

thb

There isn't any set rule, basically it's just owner preference. The majority of them just get painted with the ceiling color as that is the cheapest/quickest way to go. Some will opt to paint the vertical part with the wall color. Personally I like it when there is wide crown molding along the perimeter of the tray - which would be painted the same as the rest of the wood work.

A few pics of your bed rm might help us give an educated guess as to what would look best in your bed rm. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

That ain't messy, if you want to see a messy house go visit some of our kids

Because the tray is angled I'd keep it white or whatever color you paint the ceiling.

I'd stick with white ceiling paint on the whole thing.

tray ceiling paint color

Hello, I'm an architectural color consultant and instructor. I came across your post and thought I would answer since this s a question that comes up often in my class. Actually you should paint the entire ceiling and tray the same color as the wall. The reason for this is that wherever you have two colors meet you will be creating a focal point. In other words the eye will always go to that spot first. In your case if you paint the walls one color and the tray and ceiling another color, you will create the illusion of short walls. (It's an optical illusion) The ceiling would completely overpower the room. To avoid this you would paint everything the same color which will draw the eyes into the bedroom, not the ceiling. I hope that makes sense! Good luck!

Well, the walls are short, I don't think there's any illusion they're not from the pictures.
