Cabinet Hardware

Am repainting bathroom cabinets. Last homeowner painted cabinet hinges with oil base paint. I hate painted hardware. Have been to two different home improvement stores and got what I thought was the perfect hinge replacement, but they do not fit correctly. My question: is there a way to remove oil based paint from the old hinges without harming the finish on the hinges?

Welcome to the forums!

Exactly what is wrong with the replacement hinges?
Soaking them in lacquer thinner will dissolve the oil base paint but may harm the finish. I took over a job that the previous painter got latex paint all over the interior door hinges. I soaked them in liquid deglosser which removed the paint but took the plating off too Fortunately the home owners were so pleased with my work and how I fixed the other painter's mess - they didn't complain

they seem to be just a fraction to large because when I installed both sets my cabinet doors do not close evenly as they did before.

You might need to fill the original holes with painter's putty and then move the hinge up/down and drill new holes for the screws..... if I'm understanding it correctly
