A real problem here. Hope you can help

We are re doing an older home. I had asked my grandson to re stain the trim around the windows and doors. I did tell him to paint it on and then wipe it with a cloth.he decided he liked the color the way it looked without wiping it down.
Now of course the woodwork is tacky and isn't drying. Could anyone tell me what we can do to correct this?

thanks

You may be able to wipe it with mineral spirits (paint thinner) and remove the excess stain. I would try odorless mineral spirits.

Ya, mineral spirits should remove it although it may also need some elbow grease

Stain really only works on raw wood as it's formulated more for absorption than drying on top of a finish. Usually only a fresh coat of varnish/poly is needed to dress up old trim although often the windows need additional attention if the finish has degraded from sunlight and condensation.

btw - welcome to the forums!
