painting kitchen cabinet hinges

We decided to refinish our kitchen cabinets by painting them white. Ordered black matte pulls, however, our hinges appear in excellent shape and possibly would last another century. i am planning to paint them black. I remember from repairing my car years ago that automotive primer gave me a nice matte finish. is there something else i could use? What's the preparation steps i should take, other than cleaning them thorougly?

You don't want to use primer as the finish coat - it won't wear well. The biggest problem you will have with painted hinges is anywhere there are close tolerances the paint is apt to wear off. Cleaning takes care of 90% of the prep.

Look in the spray paint section of the big box store and look at BBQ Grill Paint. It is heat resistant (which doesn't matter in your case), tough and is a black matte finish. May match your pulls in color.

which paint

There's apparently an article on this forum, suggesting hinge painting, which appears to be a pretty simple process, the only thing missing is which paint to use. I guess I'm off to the paint store.

I didn't realize this site had a how to section on painting hinges. The prep stated is correct. Most any spray paint will work, it depends on the look you want. I've painted hinges on numerous occasion - mainly to dress up older work that either had paint on the hinges or otherwise looked out of place. The main thing is to keep the coating as thin as possible so the hinge movement doesn't 'scrape off' the paint.
