Cleaning drywall dust from newly painted walls

My walls and ceilings were just painted. There is drywall dust on the walls. How long do I need to wait before it is safe to clean the walls? Is it okay to wipe newly painted walls? Thank you!

Could you clarify a bit. Or more details at least...

How long ago were the walls painted and where did the dust come from? Additional work after the paint? All work should have been done before painting...but since it's done....

After a day or so, you could lightly wipe newly painted walls with a damp rag, rinsing or exchanging often. A hepa vac with a soft brush attachment would also work. NOT a regular vac!

Welcome to the forums!

Most paints are washable after 72 hrs, scrubable within a week.

I'd be leery of using a damp/wet rag, I'd dry dust the walls first!.... or use a vac. Drywall dust is water soluble and adding water might make for a bigger cleanup. A wet rag/sponge may be needed before you are done but should be used last.

TY Mark...I'd been up for about 19 hrs when I posted that. Guess I was thinking a little whacky. I KNOW you should brush down and vac 1st.

No biggie, at least I'm not the only one who's brain is apt to pop out of gear on occasion

Well, it's okay to wipe newly painted wall if you want to rub the paint off. The best thing you can do is watch a few days and go after it with a duster. Should be safer than using a towel or rag.

If the paint has had 12-24 hrs to dry, there shouldn't be any issues with removing drywall dust with a soft dry rag or duster. IMO a duster is better - mainly because it has a handle I've only seen a few paints that would wipe off the wall 24 hrs after application but they were a very cheap grade of paint.
