Painting over finished furniture
#1
I took an old antique dresser, roughly sanded it, primed it (2 coats) and painted it with water based paint for a friend's nursery. My question is this: What type of protectant can I put over it that will keep the dresser knobs and well used areas from eventually rubbing the paint thin? The local hardware said that polyeurathane will pull the paint right off if I put it over water based enamel paint. Any suggestions?

True, polyurethanes can damage some finishes, including oil based sanding sealer and clear coats. Call your local paint stores and ask for a waterborne polyurethane, that should help it, be sure to read the label to be sure. Next time you may want to try a quality oil based paint which is tougher than latex to begin with.
