I have applied three coats of a dark red eggshell finish latex over my kitchen walls - which are off-white. The results look terrible - like I might need two more coats at least. What is the problem? I am applying Behr paint with a roller.

bpaul, You may be right about several more coats. Any deep colors made from deep bases will be poor in coverage, even from the best paint stores. If you need more paint to finish this project I would move to B.M, S.W, or Devoe. Behr is not available in my area but the people at this forum don't think much of it. This is what you need to do and just consider it a hard $ and labor lesson you have learned. Get the paint made to color in a high grade flat latex and after lightly sanding walls with 150 grit drywall paper prime the walls. Now one coat and no more than two will finish this out using the eggshell. Be sure to use a pro quality roller cover for best results. Good Luck!....Mike
