Question

when patching nail holes in wood trim around windows is it ok to use a drywall patch or should wood putty be strickly used before painting?

Drywall compound is going to shrink too much for woodwork, if you are going to use oil based paint (or primer) use painters putty and stiffen it a little with whiting (paint store), if you are going to use a latex paint then painters putty will bleed through unless primed with an oil based primer, you can use shrink free spackeling, being sure to sand it with a 220 grit after dry, prior to priming or painting.
