The coating process to paint stained cabinets are as follows:

Sand all surfaces lightly with a 220 grit sandpaper, wipe away dust (tact cloth), putty as needed, prime with an oil based primer/undercoater such as kilz and let dry, sand lightly again and remove dust, caulk where needed using a PAINTABLE latex caulk wiping smooth with a wet finger and cleaning any mess or excess with a damp cloth and allow to dry completely, paint 2 coats with a quality paint from a pro paint store, for cabinets I like Ben Moore's oil based Impervo semigloss or gloss.

For more painting tips click the "www" below my post, it is part of this site.

Hope this helps.
