What can I use as protective coating over paint on vanity top? (desk type)

I am painting a vanity for my wife to use for putting her make up on and such. What kind of suggestions do you all have for something that I can coat the top with that will protect the paint somewhat. I would like it to maybe not make the finish really shiny. The paint has a satin finish. Thought about polyurethane but probably not the best choice. What about some kind of wax or shellac or whatever.

This is why I am putting the question to you all. You guys always have great input and it is appreciated.

Merry Christmas

Generally it's better to just use a quality enamel [any sheen] Enamels shouldn't require any clear top coat for protection. Oil base polys applied over paint often alter the color some.
