First you need to know what type of paint is currently on the woodwork - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/pa...latex-oil.html
Oil base enamels dry to the hardest film but whites will yellow and there is the slow drying time and odor to deal with. To successfully apply latex over oil enamel you need to sand and coat the enamel with a solvent based primer first. Latex enamels don't yellow, dry fast and cleans up with water but has the softest dried film. There is a big difference between the quality latex enamels and thier cheaper counterpart. Waterborne enamels don't yellow, dry fast and clean up with water and dry to almost as hard a film as oil base. The only downside to waterborne enamel is it costs more than the others.
