First drywall help

I'm at the point of sanding after applying 5 thin coats to my joints. When I shine my work light against the joint I can waves and lines where the high spots meet the lower spots. The joints feel smooth when I run my hand over but Im worried these waves and lines will show up once painted. Am I being paranoid if I cant feel them to the touch? Ive tried sanding them out but hit tape in a few spots.

Welcome to the forums. Making your last pass of mud with a 12" knife to either side of your joint will make that joint almost disappear. Center the knife over the middle of the joint allowing the mud to extend the full width of the knife. You may have a 24" swath of mud, but it won't show like what you have. Thinning the mud slightly will help on the last pass, too.

How did you sand the joints? It's important to use a sanding pole or any other method to hold the sandpaper flat! Just folding sandpaper and using your hand won't produce a flat surface.

I muddled the joints first with a 6 inch knife then 10 inches out followed by 12 inches either side. I tried the pole sander at first but found I had more control with a small light and medium block. Like I said it feels flat and smooth when I run my hand across, but with a light shining across you can see fine waves and lines. Hoping these will disappear with 2 coats of primer and a couple coats of paint.

Lay a straightedge across the j/c to see if/how flat it is. If there are highs/lows - paint won't fix it!

To control the problems of drywall, the water should be less in quantity during initial mixture
