New home / Best paint

Hello!

We're moving into our new home (older construction, well cared for) in June! We're ridiculously excited, however after being in an apartment for years, I'm so happy to find this board!

I found one very detailed paint thread where everyone (mostly) agreed that BM or SW paints (mid line or higher) are the way to go and staying out of the box stores.

Do you know if SW can match a BM paint color? (Im thinking Revere Pewter for our bedroom... semigloss?) What type of paint to you recommend within the SW family? (current walls are a very very pale green/mint. Hoping the paint is good enough we wont have to prime first)
Looking at SW right now because their store is Much closer. Bedroom Walls, and Kitchen Cabs painting projects are first on the list.

And sorry if this is the wrong thread here, where can I go for general inside the house maintenance/fix information? We're moving to a town home. And there used to be a line of books by Time Life for general home DIY, but I cant find them anymore. Looking for basic advice on knowing what I can fix myself, maintaining it before it breaks, and then knowing when I really ought to call a pro. Interior Home Upkeep for Beginners -Thanks

Most paint and specifically SW can match most competitor brands.

Most any paint store can match a competitor's color. Usually they need a sample to go off of, while actual paint works best they can match a color swatch or anything else you bring in. Many stores will keep records of the formula for a competitors popular colors. IMO semi-gloss is too shiny for residential walls, I'd use satin or eggshell enamel.

I suspect the how to books have pretty much outlived their selves since you can usually find what you need on the internet.

almost forgot welcome to the forums!

Definitely avoid semi-gloss. The only place I'd use it is the bathroom ceiling and possibly walls.
Take a look at the walls before you paint. If there seems to be a lot of imperfections, go with a flat paint, it will hide a lot more than eggshell or semi.

And you don't have avoid the big box stores. There are only a few companies that actually manufacture paint. Home Depot sells Sico (here in Canada anyway) which is made by PPG. I believe PPG recently bought Dulux as well.
Just buy a quality product, not the super cheap stuff.

Welcome to the forums m_bisson!

The problem with big box paint depts is they carry a lot of coatings based solely on low price. HD carries [or used to] some of Glidden's paint. Glidden makes great paint but like all manufactures they also have cheap coatings not fit for much. The line of Glidden paint carried by HD is their bottom line of coatings. IMO letting HD sell that paint has hurt Glidden's reputation.

The other problem with paint depts is their help often isn't as knowledgeable as their counterpart in a paint store. This can be an issue with both advice and precision matching of colors. Most have computer matching which will get it close but it takes a good eye and knowledge to refine it to a perfect match.

Thanks for the welcome!

It is true that they carry a lot of low-cost products, but you don't always have to spend a lot to get a decent coating. Benjamin Moore Aura, for example, is not twice as good because it's twice the price of promar 200 or lifemaster.

Not to hit jack the thread, but keep an eye out for sales as well. Or buy one get one free deals. Home Depot recently beat my paint store contractor pricing for Zinser 123 primer just with their regular weekly sale.

Just a note to all, If you go to BM or SWP look online for a discount coupon. Many cases you can get up to a 30% discount.

Just my non-painter pro input here: I have had very good luck with the Behr paint from Big orange. I just used some of their top end paint and was VERY impressed with the smooth finish we got, which was comparable to some SW paint I used on a side job I did for a friend. I am always at the big box store so it is just more convenient to get my paint there. Last time I checked, The prices on Behr is not that much less than SW.
