How to handle an exterior metal spiral stair painting...
Hello,
Got a spiral stair on backyard . Painted last year with water base paint , after I removed most of the rust and insulated with a clear antirust coat.
A year later the metal stair has a lot of rusted spots and i'm ready to painted again.
This time I thought to take advices from you guys on what paint to use ( water or oil base) and how to remove the rust, should I remove(strip) the old paint, what is the best rustprove primer...... ????
Thank you

Solvent based coatings will inhibit rust a lot better than latex or waterbased. It's always best to remove all the rust [shiny metal if feasible] Latex coatings hold up better in the intense fla sun but have very little rust inhibiting properties.
I would aggressively sand it, remove the dust and coat with a good rust inhibitive oil base primer followed by a coat of oil base exterior enamel. If you are concerned that the oil finish will fade too much you could apply 2 good coats of primer and then a waterbased finish.

Thanks guys for your advices, one more thing I have to ask/clear, is that I'm not talking only for the rails, the steps need the same treatments as well??
Can I use the same finish oil base paint, or there are products that handle better stepping on ???
Thanks

What about an alkyd floor paint?
I can't really think of anything that would stand up well.... Look at all the metal staircases you've been on, lol. It always wears through in no time.

Pre-catalyzed epoxy? Sherwin Williams has one that's not too pricey. Used it in a university lab a couple years ago. 2 coats on block and it dried ridiculously hard, though not as good as a real epoxy.
