painting or laminating stair risers

I removed the carpet from the stairs in my house and had the wood steps sanded and refinished. They look great. The risers (vertical space between steps) on the other hand look terrible. It's bad quality wood with cracks in it and three peeling layers of paint.

Is there a thin wood laminate out there that I could cut to size and glue/nail on, and then paint? If not, how would you suggest stripping the existing layers of paint, considering one or more of them could have lead in them? Sanding may not be such a good idea right? Any great chemical strippers out there that work on vertical surfaces?

Thanks for your help!

vanOs, If you want to try to strip the risers try Peel Away. I think if you are able I would try to find a thin veneer material and glue it on. This would make the risers like new again and would enable you to stain or paint...Mike
