How to paint RTF (Ridged Thermo Foil) cabinet doors

I would like to know if RTF (Ridged Thermo Foil) cabinet doors can be painted. If so, what is the recommended type on paint and preparation procedure?

Don't know that I've ever painted any but if I had to paint them I'd start with a good cleaning, scuff sanding and a coat of pigmented shellac like Zinnser's BIN for the primer.

Thanks marksr, I previously painted the inside of the door with interior latex satin and it just scraped off. I'll try your suggestion soon and get back to you with the results.....buzcar

That's going to be a tough one. RTF is designed to resist most anything adhering to it.

Contact cement adheres very well to it, and I only say that as a clue to what sort of paint might?

Maybe Mark knows of some solvent based paint.

That's why I suggested using a pigmented shellac primer [BIN] as it will adhere better to tricky substrates than most any other primer. It can be top coated with your choice of enamel [latex, oil base or waterborne]
