old wood porch-fixing cracks and splits

hello

i am prepping an old wood porch for paint, there are old wood columns which have splits or enlarged seams. for small splits i have always used the DAP paintable caulk. would it be acceptable to use liquid nails for larger or wider splits?
someone had suggested BONDO but i find the liquid nails easier to work with

thanks for the opinions

prepping gouges in wood prior to painting with liquid nails?

is it ok to prep gouges in exterior wood with liquid nails? someone suggested bondo would be better. or is basic 35 year DAP caulk just as good?

thank you

It would be difficult to get a seamless repair with caulking or similar. Bondo or exterior spackling is the best way to fill the defects. It's best to coat the repair with an oil base primer after it's finished.

I'm not sure that liquid nail would be any better than caulking but it can be painted over. I don't think that a non flexible filler like bondo would be a good idea. The columns will continue to expand/contract with humidity changes and might make bondo or similar to pop out. How wide are the cracks?

Why not just wrap them with new 1X's or better yet PVC?
Lots of company's make post wraps that would never rot or need painting again.

There are specific wood repair products as well but there aren't necessarily required.

I merged your two threads on this question; please do not duplicate like this in the future as it makes it harder for us to know what someone else has already mentioned.

Just to be clear, there is a difference between gouges and cracks. The method preferred to repair one isn't necessarily the right method for the other. I like Joe's suggestion of wrapping the posts.
