Need help painting my piano please!!

Hello everyone! I want to paint my piano and I was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to achieve the look I am going for. I want to paint it to look like my bass guitar. The color will be a white blonde look. I am including a picture of my guitar to show the effect I am going for. The thing I need help with is I want the grain of the wood to show through and I have no clue how to make that happen. Is that just a matter of not painting too thick? Any help would be very much appreciated! Thank You!!!

Welcome to the forums!

What type of finish [if any] is currently on the piano? The guitar appears to have a pickle finish on it, basically a white wash stain followed by multiple coats of poly [varnish, lacquer, etc] You have to have raw unsealed wood to apply any type of wood stain including pickle.

Thank you for the response! It has paint on it. I'm not sure what type it is or anything (I'm a very novice painter/do it yourselfer). So from what I gather, I will need to strip the paint that is on it now and then white wash it and then finish with lacquer. Does that sound about right? I have a removable back panel on the piano that I can use to practice before I do the whole thing.

I also have an image that I am going to paint on the piano. Should I do that before I put on the lacquer? Again, thank you sooo much for all of your knowledge and help!!!

Yes, to get that finish you'd need to strip off all of the existing finish. That is best accomplished using a chemical stripper and finishing up with sandpaper. I don't know much about the construction of pianos but care needs to be use to make sure you don't sand thru any of the veneer!

Usually any image that is painted on [decals too] are usually applied over the initial coats of lacquer [with most of the sanding done] with a coat or two of lacquer over the image to protect it. You need to make sure the image is compatible with the lacquer! Lacquer can melt some finishes.

A pic or two of the piano might garner more advice - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html
