Question Can 40 year old old aluminum window screens be refurbished by a DIYer?

My 40 year old house has a variety of original Anderson windows with removable aluminum screens. The screens are turning white and are unsightly. I tried black spray paint but that didn't make them look much better. At Home Depot I was advised that I can replace the screening on the original frames because of the way the frames are put together and replacing all of the screens is too costly for me. I plan to sell the house soon and need to improve the appearance of the 30+ screens. Can anyone advise me on my best course of action?
Many thanks,
Marciann

Welcome to the forums!

What exactly did you do when you sprayed them black. I've painted screens before and the trick is to evenly mist the entire screen with flat black paint.

Hi marksr,
Thanks for responding. I scrubbed both sides with TSP, rinsed with the hose, dried and sprayed 3 times with rustolium flat black. The screens are well oxidized. Maybe I didn't apply enough paint but it didn't look like it was doing much good.

Post a pic or two of the screens and maybe we can tell what went wrong.
