Does that help?
Yes, it does.

Not sure I totally understand what you are asking if you just mix 2 paint colors together you will have solid paint which won't match the other cabinets
I guess I asked the question because it occurred to me that's really where I started this thread in the beginning; asking about painting the existing cabinets to closely match the new ones. That is until I discovered the paint stores said they couldn't. So in a sense, through a fair amount of trial and error and your help, haven't I really come up with the two basic colors of paint that will closely match the general shade of the new cabinets assuming I only wanted to paint them?

Obviously your suggested approach blending the appropriate paint colors with poly makes more sense and should yield a much better result and is the path I will now follow. I'll report progress (or ask questions) as I move forward.

Sorry if I confused things.

No problem, some days I'm easily confused
The reason for mixing the color with the poly is so you'll get transparent color which is what you need to better match the other cabinets. IMO that will look a lot better than just paint.

mark, here's another question I failed to ask as I move forward.

As I've stated, I know mixing the two stain colors together in a 2 to 1 ratio gets me real close to the ultimate color I'm after.

What I didn't ask is what ratio of poly to paint should I use or start with?

i.e. - 2 pints of dark mahogany paint to 1 pint merlot paint mixed into 3 pints poly so its 50% paint and 50% poly?

What do you suggest based on your experience?

Thank you

50% paint is probably too much. I've never really measured what I've mixed up but rather add some tint to the poly, apply some to test piece and then add more as needed. You want to be able to see thru the tinted poly. Remember it's easier to add more color than it is to reduce the color by adding more poly. A little color goes a long way! Try pouring just some of your poly into a bucket and then add about 10% color and see where that brings you.
