Wooden Planter Finish Question?

Hello,
I made a couple wooden planter boxes for my mom for flowers and I'd like to know if anyone can help me out with what to finish them with? They will be outside. Is it polyurethane? I am not sure what to finish them with, no color stain is needed...I just would like to put some type of finish on them to protect the wood. Thanks!

You didn't say what type of wood you used. Either way, Cabot makes a clear stain. I'm sure that Sikkens does as well. They are the 2 most recognized brands. Home Depot should have their own brand, as well.

Spar urethane or spar varnish is the only poly type coating that can be used outside and even it doesn't always fare well when exposed to the elements. A clear deck/siding stain as Pulpo mentioned would be a better choice. Does the inside of the planter have a liner or something to protect the wood from moisture? Moisture that migrates thru the wood will lift any coating applied to the other side!

If there pressure treated you need to wait a few months for the wood to dry out.
If not your just sealing in the moisture and it's going to mold up.
When I make wooden plant boxes I use Cedar or Cypruss, before building I first go buy some plastic plant boxes, then make the box with no bottom and just set the plastic planter into the wooden frame.
That way it's lined and the bottoms not going to rot out.

They are made with cedar fence slats and then 2x2's for the legs and 1x3's for the trim. I think the 2x2's and 1x3's are fir or dried whitewood? The planter's are gonna hold a plant that is in a plastic planter. I just want something that I can apply after a light sanding so they might last a little longer outside..Thanks

Cedar holds up pretty well but untreated pine doesn't do that great, especially when used where it can get wet AND take a long time to dry out. I'd recommend using a toner/translucent stain. I can't recommend thompson's water seal.
