Matching paint by sample or by competitor "specs"?
I need to get some matching paint. The original paint is on the concrete stucco wall, but I have an empty paint can with an inch of the old paint dried up like clay. It is a Benjamin Moore can with this code on it:
YW 3X14
BR 4X26
BK 3X2
WH X20
Ultra base 183 4B
Flat exterior
I assume this is what they need to make the paint at BM? If I go to a Home Depot and ask for this could they make me a can of the same paint or its a different system and I must bring in a painted sample to match?

The tint formula can change when a different base is used. Using the same formula with a competitor's paint might make it close but it would not be a perfect match. Most paint stores do a good job of matching a competitor's color providing they have a sample to match to. I don't know how good paint depts are at matching colors.
Unless you go to a BM store, it would be best to take the old can with you. I assume there is some dried paint on the outside of the can that they can use for matching.
