Repainting medical rehab chairs and stools

I have an adjustable chair and shower stool left from my accident recovery. They are traditional pebbled white plastic and adjustable aluminum framed construction. They are perfect for my outdoor work but I hate the white hospital look of the plastic. Can they be painted so they'll hold up to rough treatment?

Do they need a sturdy primer or other preparation? All advice greatly appreciated!

A pic or two might help us better understand what you have along with what coating will work best.

Generally latex paints adhere better to aluminum and plastic than solvent based coatings do.
The odds are whatever coating you use won't hold up as well as the factory finish

My mother has a similar chair. I don't think I'd want to paint the aluminum tubing.
The plastic is pretty smooth to take paint well.

Is it something like this....

Something like that would be difficult to get a lasting paint job on. If the legs are adjusted up/down it will wear off the paint, not sure how well paint would last on the seat either. Probably the best thing to try on the seat [after a good cleaning, light sanding] would be Krylon's Fusion ..... I think that's the name of their paint formulated for painting plastic.

Krylon also has a plastic paint primer I believe. The Fusion works well, but I agree it may not take a lot of sliding and scuffing. Light sanding means with a relatively coarse grit...just follow the can/website instructions.

...... but not coarse enough to put visible grooves in the plastic. What you want are minor scratches in the smooth plastic so there is more surface area for the primer to adhere to.
