Alligatoring paint after using filler on walls

HI all,

I hope you can help me on this one please. I filled my walls with flexible filler and sanded them. I then after cleaning and dusting the walls off neatly painted them with Crown White Emulsion Matt paint all was fine left it over night to dry.
the next day at 3pm today I started to paint with my Dulux Natural hessian in my living room everything went fine and it went on evenly. Later at 9pm I looked at my walls with horror and my heart sank! The places where the filler is in place on my plasterboard walls is 'Alliogatoring' it's cracking very fast. I painted many coats of paint in one go and I am wondering if this was the issue didn't let the paint dry before putting on another coat all my walls are ok except this one with filler and it's odd that it's only in areas I filled the walls.
How can I fix this issue. I have other wall I have pre filled and now I am panicking this issue will keep happening.

I am panicking at painting my other walls as they have been filled and need sanding. Then they need the emulsion on top to cover the fact previous tenant painted walls a lovely shade of primary Yellow..( yikes!) not even a nice welcoming shade it's just primary yellow.
I had the issue in this room of mass alligatoring and had to remove chunks of paint and fill it.

what can I do to make this stop please? as i ma dreading putting more paint up and watching it crack quickly.

I have made sure I have aired the room while its drying.

I sadly put my furniture back in their original places and now have to move them back again away from walls to get to the areas of alligatoring.

I feel annoyed and wondering if Dulux natural hessian paint is now a rubbish paint. This room is a nightmare it's just becoming a mess of filler...and now yet again to my anger a mess of alligatoring the one thing I prayed wouldn't happen is happenng again.

house from hell...

thank you

While I've used oil base Dulux and was satisfied with the quality, I don't remember ever using any of their latex paint.

When fresh paint alligators it almost always means that either there was a contaminant on the substrate or the underlying coat didn't dry sufficiently before the next coat was applied.

The fix is usually fairly simple, aggressively sand [if any paint isn't bonded well that will break it loose] skim coat with joint compound, sand when dry, prime and paint [allowing each coat to dry first ]

I filled my walls with flexible filler
Sounds to me that you used a silicone caulking for your "flexible filler" it is not paintable and paint will not stick to it. Please tell us exactly what "flexible filler" you used. You can post a picture if that is easier. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...rt-images.html

That didn't even enter my mind silicone caulk would follow under a contaminant on the wall. Even latex caulk can cause problems if too much paint is applied, especially if applied too soon.

thanks Ray

skip this chunk to the important bit!--->> HI all yes I had a hairline crack to my wall. I have managed to get past other issues I have had around the home. MY neighbours said I feel sorry for you the previous tenant had a tmeper and use to throw things at walls and paint things in primary shades! she sure did the more I fix the more I find wrong but..it;'s slowly coming together<-----) I have had the weirdest issues painting this house it's bizzare. When painting my old home I had absolutely no issues yet I was painting mostly over blown vinyl. THis is the first time I Have ever been in D.I.Y hell. THis house everything I try to do well it comes back and sticks 2 fingers up at me. Yet I am not use to platerboard at all. I had thick insulated walls.----
The hallway is now finished and the bathroom is 90 % done as in still want to change some decor! The more I stare at things the more I want to buy. I have to say you have all been amazingly helpful and this forum is a Godsend!

Caulking isn't formulated to be spread over an area as a filler, it's designed for sealing gaps [like between 2 pieces of wood or wood and drywall]

The powdered filler should be fine for skimming/filling in the cracks in the paint.

I never ever ever want to see caulk again. I was told by surveyor and numerous people to use it..it's paintable over no problem. DIY store go for it! I feel like sueing the stupid surveyor for telling me to use this stuff. It's flexible it's a good caulk go with it. fantastic.

I don't like sanding due to asthma and I Hate the dust it leaves behind I feel so angry I could scream.

Caulking is good for some things, just not how you used it
Obviously the better you apply filler, the less sanding is needed. You might try taking a damp/wet sponge to the applied filler as it's setting up to smooth it out. In occupied homes I often take a wet sponge to dried joint compound [which is water soluble] to smooth it out and eliminating any sanding dust. The better/neater the mud is applied the better this method works.

A scuff sanding should be fine, it's unlikely the caulking will come off the wall. At this point you just need to hide the cracks.

I got my P80 sandpaper black and decker mouse out and did some sanding over the areas. I have some 151 all purpose filler read instructions says I can paint over it. it was pretty quick I am relieved it's not as widespread as I thought it would be.
I had to sand my other wall as I had used this on it. I feel like a complete idiot for listening to the surveyor and b&qs advice.:S I am angry as I have wasted a day sanding this all neat on other wall. I still have some to do and wow the dust you get from sanding is awful. Hats off to those of you who do that daily. I had full mask goggles on and covered everything over. Least I have learnt the lesson never used caulk for filling walls as I did...:S

Size: 29.1 KB I hope this is good enough now to fill the cracks. I am just glad the cracks are not too deep that it can be lightly filled. I have also learnt put the fille ron very thinly as putting on a lot means sanding forver. it's no joy when that happens.

tyvm

I bet you are all going... omg this lady is terrible at DIY!

I don't think any of us enjoy sanding. The neater you apply the filler, the less sanding is needed to make it look good. Sometimes it's better to have to apply an extra coat of filler than do more sanding.

Don't be so hard on yourself, we all started out knowing nothing. The nice thing about forums like this one is you can learn from pros or those who've done a bunch of it and shorten your learning curve
