For prep all you need to do is make sure the brick are clean. You'd then either use a masonry primer or go old school and thin the finish paint 10% and use it as a primer.[when doing the latter I like to add Flood's EmulsaBond to the 1st coat] House paints will last longer than masonry paints as they are a higher grade coating.

Colors depend both on your personal tastes and what goes with the roof and trim colors.

Thanks Marksr

should i use latex paint or something else. Also how many coats of primer and paint are generally applied.Masonry paint is around $38 a gallon and house paint around SW $22 a gallon.I tried house paint semi gloss just for trying but the color came out very light than actual color, why would such thing happen.

Latex primer and paint is fine. Not sure why masonry paint would be priced higher than siding paint - it's usually the other way around. Not sure I understand your last sentence

What i meant was i bought dark brown semi gloss house paint and tried it on the brick veneer wall but the the tone came out to be much lighter shade than the color on brick, while same color was dark when applied on siding. So i just want to make sure whether this happened b'cz of characteristics of brick wall or because of house paint quality.

That difference had nothing to do with the paint quality. The same color on different substrates can appear different because of how the light reflects off of the substrate. Also unpainted brick are thirsty so it might take 2-3 coats to get the full effect of the color [you might be seeing some of the brick color bleeding thru]

You might also want to review " mineral silicate paints" or "potassium silicate paint" to investigate their performance on masonry surfaces.
