10 yr old walls, never painted
We've been in our house now for 10 years and the walls and ceiling in our home have never been painted except for the kitchen wall and the bathroom walls. The builder had the walls and ceilings in all of the other rooms "plastered". The walls and ceiling have plaster board upon which they put a heavy skim coat on, and on the walls in the living room there is a pretty heavy 1/4 swirl texture. The kitchen and bath walls have a smooth texture to them.
After 10 years of "living" in the house, how do I begin to prep the walls? If I wash them I would wash some of the grittiness of the sand in the texture off. The texture is pretty heavy, so how can I get the grooves in the texture clean enough to support paint? The walls are bone white throughout. I don't know how to begin, but I would like to paint to freshen and add some color.

Why would you go 10 yrs without painting the walls
A lot depends on how dirty the plaster veneer is. If not real bad, a good latex prime followed by a coat or two of finish paint is fine but if there is a lot of grime and you're hesitant to wash it - use an oil base primer. Latex paint will adhere fine to oil base primer.

Thanks for the response. The walls look like they are painted but aren't. Our builder didn't do us any favors by not addressing the painting when the house was built. We didn't know anything about building a new house and your faith to be steered in the right direction was left to the builder. There is more than just our house in the subdivision without paint on the walls. Then the builder skipped town... Thanks again, going to try the oil based primer. I'm not trying to cut corners by not washing the walls and ceiling, but there is 1700 square feet of floor in the house and vaulted ceilings in the great room. A whole lot of washing... I just want to make sure there is no peeling of paint later or any other issues because I didn't do the prep right.
