Can Pressure Treated Wood Be painted?

My friend has a pergola made with is type of pressure treated wood:

Pressure-Treated Timber HF Brown Stain (Common: 4 in. x 6 in. x 8 ft.; Actual: 3.56 in. x 5.63 in. x 96 in.)-449074 - The Home Depot

Its a dark brown color and looks nice but she wants to stain it or paint it since the kids play around it and touch the rails. Will stain in it do anything, or is the color to dark?

According to the product overview it's paintable. Generally PT wood needs to dry out from the PT process before any coating should be applied. Water color stain does she want to use?

I'd be using a solid stain not paint so I would have to deal later one with peeling paint.
There's nothing in pressure treated wood that's going to hurt those kids.

What does kids touching it have to do with staining or painting it?

I'm with Joe in that I would stick with stains and not paint.

They do use chemicals to treat the wood. The chemicals used get changed from time to time as the gov't decides some of the ones used have harmful side effects BUT a lot of the chemicals leach out of the wood during the 1st few months. After the lumber has dried from the PT process the danger from exposure is low.

There are chemicals in paint and stain as well.

I think she's being overly paranoid.
