What to do about painting drywall return on doorway?
Well, I don't know what you call the doorway area connecting two rooms that has drywall all around, i.e. no wood trim anywhere.
Here is the dilemma. I have a living room that is adjacent to a hallway. You enter between the living room and hallway via an old door that we removed. Now, there is drywall all around the previous spot where the door casing was between the living room and doorway.
So, I am wondering. The living room and hallway are painted two different colors. What color should I paint the drywall area between the two rooms where the door casing used to be?

I'm not a decorator by any means, but I don't think it really matters much. What I usually do is paint it the color of the most important room, for lack of a better term. In this case, if I follow you, it will either match the living room or the hallway. I'd paint it to match the living room. But as long as you do a neat job and have a clean line I think it will look ok either way.

The only difference is I would say one room is dominant to the other (as opposed to important) and I would go with that color. Dang near exactly the same thing Carbide said.

I agree, it normally goes with the dominate room. About the only thing I would add is if the floor covering changes at the doorway - that would dictate where the room color change would be.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the tip. I think painting it the dominant color of the main room, in this case the living room, would look the best. The living room is a brown color, while the hallway is a beige color.
What about this idea... what if I painted the drywall area between the two rooms, where the door casing used to be, hmmm let's see.. What if I painted that area white? Would that look weird since the two adjoining rooms are different colors? Does anybody do this?

I've done a few jobs where they cheaped out and installed casing without a jamb and I painted the casing and drywall 'jamb' to look like a cased opening. IMO just painting the drywall return the trim color wouldn't look right although I have seen it done before.
